Negativity

In my opinion there is too much pessimism all-around: in this week, when you leave me alone, I've been adopted by post-doc, who describe a gloomy future; Marlies came one times, saying that we both will feel bad in our visiting period; I spoke with a third year PhD student and he said he is in a bad situation... is there any favourable person in this f***ing Department?

If you really don't want to follow the optimism of your Presidente del Consiglio, at least think to Coles' words: "statistics is beautiful => life is beautiful!!!"

  2. Life is beautiful, I'm sure and I'm having great time since I started the PhD. I had the occasion to learn more about Statistics, to know y'all, to go to conferences and met wonderful statisticians like Bala or David, my Advisor here. I also met really great and funny people at workshop and summerschools. I'm spending one year in the United States working in a very exciting department that is wonderful both from the everyday life (new people, new culture, place to see, new food or beer!) and working view point.

evertheless thinking about the future there are just two possible path, I'm sure.

    1) Change country and go to work abroad (not just a post doc, I guess...)

    2) Change work and come back to business.

As Bustra said once, you have to fight to reach your goals. Fighting means sacrifice. If a grad student says that his/her in a bad situation he probably didn't fight so hard or will not want to do it in the future.

Riccardo, I wait you in Chicago in a month.

  4. @ Marlies: September?! That's great news!

    @ everyone:
I guess I'm an optimistic person, but I'm not so afraid by the future... I mean, it's all a matter of priorities.. if you want to be reach, Research will not be the right choice for you (even in the US) but if you want to do an exciting job I have the feeling that it's the right place...
Ok, here it's all another world with respect to Italy, but we already touch the bottom (I don't know if it makes any sense in English, though..) I guess that things can only get better!

Anyway, since I'm here I received via mailing list something like 3/4 job offers looking for a PhD in statistics... both in Academic and non-Academic...

"if you want to be reach, Research will not be the right choice for you (even in the US)"

A parte che se scrive rich, qua se ti fai il mazzo non e' che ti paghino poco. Non so a Berkeley, ma a Duke, che e' privata, non fanno proprio una brutta vita...

Anyway I totally agree with you, is a matter of priorities. You must put in your balance: quality of life, quality of job, money, place to live and place to see and free time. And make you choice!
